3 unexpected ways for women in their 40s to protect their skin this summer

I hope you’re making time in your busy schedule to soak up all the delicious vitamin D summer has to offer!

Low Vitamin D is very common, and this gets worse in our 40s+ (aka perimenopause). Low levels make you susceptible to osteoporosis. Healthy levels can regulate your mood and support immune and heart health.

But, of course, make sure you’re not overdoing it.

I know what you’re thinking…just add some sunscreen and call it a day, right?

Well…

Not all sunscreens are created equal.

In fact, many conventional brands are loaded with icky chemicals.

But don’t worry…

Here are my top 3 ways to outsmart the sun (no questionable sunscreen required):

1-Eat your sunblock instead?

See, the foods we eat play a huge role in our skin’s health and resilience.

So load up on antioxidant-rich goodies like berries, leafy greens, and healthy fats (like avocados) to help your skin defend against sun damage.

Will these nutrient-dense foods protect you from sunburn if you spend all day at the beach? Not exactly. But they’ll help. Your diet as more of an impact on your skin’s health than you think!

2-Make sun protection fashionable

Nothing says summer like a wide-brimmed hat. (I have this one and love that it can be rolled up for travel!)

And don’t forget your sassy sunglasses. (I just loooove these.)

You can even find clothing with an SPF rating, like this swimsuit coverup (I have it in dark blue).

3-Make shade your BFF

And when you’re soaking up the great outdoors, be strategic about seeking out shade…especially during those peak sun hours between 10am and 4pm.

Plan your outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon…and take frequent breaks under a leafy tree or umbrella.

Remember, these tips are meant to complement, not completely replace, your regular sun protection routine.

And when you wear sunblock? Check the Environmental Working Group for safer brands to choose from. Here’s a tinted one I like.

Now go have some fun!

Seed cycling for hormonal balance

Have you been struggling with heavy periods, migraines, sleep issues, cramps, or night sweats to name a few??? These seed & nut mixes may be the tool for you. When I first heard about seed cycling I thought it sounded very crunchy and hard to do. Then I realized I already eat some of these nuts and seeds. It was just a matter of planning which ones when.  How does it work? It's fairly straightforward. The seed hulls contain lignans, which are chemicals that help bind up excess hormones, while the seed oils contain essential fatty acids that provide the building blocks for making hormones. Seed cycle is including different seeds during the different phases of your menstrual cycle. How long does it take to work? It may take a 3-4 months to notice a change so don't give up right away. If you don’t see an improvement after 3-4 months, consider reaching out to chat with me about additional help in balancing your hormones. Below are two recipes that are super delicious & ...

Warm & Cozy Fall Recipe

It was Easter weekend Spring 2021. My family and I were camping in our pandemic purchased used RV on a horse farm in upstate New York. The temps dropped to the low 20’s that night and our furnace wouldn’t work. We were freezing. We snuggled together all night to stay warm. Our pancakes and hot coffee the next morning never felt so cozy. The trip was salvaged.  Here is a recipe that will make you feel just as warm and cozy (from the comforts of your home).  The rest of my family agrees.  P.S. It’s dairy-free, gluten-free, & vegan.  Enjoy with your favorite ice cream:) Schedule a free chat with me here .
